In addition to ENERGY STAR, the 6” and 4” downlights also meet Title 24 installation standards and comply with the California Quality Specification set forth by the California Energy Commission (CEC). This voluntary specification has stricter performance standards than ENERGY STAR, especially regarding CRI and chromaticity.

As members of GREEN CREATIVE’S CRISP SERIES, the 6” Downlight 16W and 4” Downlight 12W retrofit kits provide exceptional color rendering with typical CRI 92 and R9 60 values. The California Quality Spec requires a tighter chromaticity than ENERGY STAR. Don’t Buy a Home Having Any of Top 12 Toxic Mold Makers, Advises Mold Consultant Phillip Fry

Certified Environmental Hygienist Phillip Fry warns homebuyers to avoid purchasing a home with any of the top causes of toxic mold growth.

Monday, February 17, 2014 -- “Prevent serious and dangerous health harm to family members by not buying a house or condominium that has any of the top dozen major sources of indoor toxic mold,” recommends mold expert Phillip Fry, webmaster since 1999 of the mold information website www.moldinspector.com, Certified Environmental Hygienist, and Certified Mold Inspector.

The top twelve toxic mold creators or sources in family residences, plus many more water intrusion and mold issues, are detailed on the website www.buildingmoldinspection.com.

1. Carpeting. Carpeting and carpet padding are great mold food, and mold growth can easily hide inside carpeting and padding. Read the top 12 environmental health dangers of indoor carpeting at www.moldexpertconsultants.com/carpet_health_problems.htm.

2. Indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, or large fish aquarium. An indoor pool or an always-full Jacuzzi spa or a large fish aquarium continually generates high indoor humidity to drive indoor toxic mold growth.

3. Humidifier. Whether the humidifier is built into the home’s heating/cooling equipment or it is a free-standing, portable unit, a humidifier increases indoor humidity and mold growth.

4. Automatic ice maker in the refrigerator. The water supply line that brings water to an automatic ice maker often goes bad, thus leaking water into, and causing hidden mold growth, into kitchen floors, walls, and cabinets.
5. Kitchen, bathroom, or dryer vents. Such vents often exhaust high humidity, mold-causing air into the insides of attics, crawl spaces, walls, ceilings, or floors, rather than directly to the outdoors.

6. Air conditioning condensation pan leaks. Air conditioning systems include a drip pan to catch water than condenses and drips from the air conditioning coils. Such drip pans are sometimes poorly installed or the pan drain pipe becomes blocked, thus allowing water flooding and mold growth into adjacent walls and ceilings.

7. Building lot sloping toward the house. If the house building lot slopes downward toward the house, rather than away from the house, there is going to be significant water intrusion into the basement, crawl space, concrete slab, and/or building foundation, and thus enabling the growth of mold resulting from such water intrusion.

8. House on the side or bottom of a hill. A residence that is located on the side of a hill or at the bottom of a hill will be a moldy house because rain fall will cause significant ground water intrusion into the same areas mentioned above.

9. Roof overhang too short. If the roof overhang extends less than two feet beyond the walls beneath the overhang, rainfall will fall upon and run down the exterior walls to soak into the wood and masonry surfaces of such walls.

10. Leaky roof. If the roof surface or flashings around a chimney or furnace and plumbing vent pipes are degraded or poorly-maintained, water will enter into the home’s attic and run downward into the insides of the ceilings, floors, and walls beneath the attic to cause huge, hidden toxic mold growth therein.

11. Crawl space. Most crawl space dirt floors suffer from water wicking upward from the ground water in the soil. In addition, rainfall frequently runs into crawl spaces. Crawl space water intrusion results in big toxic mold growth that can grow upward into the insides of the floors and walls above.

12. Leaking water supply or sewage drain pipes. Plumbing line leaks can cause massive toxic mold growth inside and on walls, ceilings, and floors.

Mold Expert Recommends Turning Off House Water Supply While Away To Prevent Water Break Flooding

Certified Environmental Hygienist Phillip Fry recommends five steps to prevent house or workplace flooding from a broken water pipe during the prolonged absence of the homeowner, rental tenant, or workplace employees, such as over a weekend or vacation.

Montrose, MI, February 12, 2014 -- “Many homeowners or rental tenants return from a weekend or longer vacation or business trip to discover that their home has been ruined by widespread house flooding and toxic mold growth that resulted from a broken water supply line,” warns Certified Environmental Hygienist Phillip Fry, webmaster since 1999 of the mold education website www.moldinspector.com, and co-manager of the nationwide EnviroFry mold inspection and remediation company.

A good example of the home devastation that can happen during any prolonged absence of the homeowner or rental tenant is what happened during the past few weeks to a beautiful home in Sedona, Arizona. A water supply line above the kitchen ceiling suddenly broke, and thus enabled water to flow for several weeks from above the ceiling to over half of the house, ruining ceilings, walls, floors, kitchen cabinets, furniture, and furnishings in the flooded areas. Thousands of gallons of water flooded the house while the homeowner was out of town.

The water and mold damage removal and remediation cost over $20,000, not counting the cost to rebuild damaged areas and to replace kitchen cabinets, carpeting and other flooring, and furniture and furnishings. 3. On at least a quarterly basis, turn off all faucets and then watch the water meter measurement dial for at least one hour. If the water meter keeps on recording higher consumption even when all faucets are turn off, there is likely to be a water leak in the water supply rooms in the home or workplace.

4. Always be on the lookout for water stains and mold growth anywhere on the building’s ceilings, walls, floors, and furnishings.

5. "The Last Days of Che Guevara" Marks Another Milestone for Red Quill Books

Founded in 2009, at the height of the Great recession, the alternative press is about to celebrate its fifth year of operation with over two-dozen titles. The publishing house was set up with the mission of creating a new space for disseminating critical ideas in creative ways. Five years on, Red Quill Books (RQB) is prospering largely due to the success of its wildly successful “radical comix” series which includes a manga version of Das Kapital, a four-part series on the Communist Manifesto (available in four languages), and a new biographical comic entitled “The Last Days of Che Guevara” released last month.

“It’s no secret that our success is largely due to the comic book series,” says George Rigakos, head of RQB’s Editorial Collective. “We have also stayed true to our core mission of maintaining a green, print-on-demand model and actively supporting student scholarships.” Indeed, Red Quill’s success is even more remarkable given that the press has not accepted a penny of state assistance in an industry dominated by large university presses that are heavily dependent on government subsidies. “We don’t want to be beholden to any interest that might undermine our mission,” says Rigakos, “we can’t start compromising on that.” As a result, the little press has remained fiercely independent, supporting provocative titles and experimenting with comic books as a way to distinguish itself from the rest of the academic market.

Red Quill’s latest project is “The Last Days of Che Guevara: A Graphic Novel,” an accessible and engaging introduction to the life and mythology of what is arguably history’s most well known revolutionary. The biographical comic begins with Ernesto Guevara’s capture in October 1967, tracing the power of his legacy through his engagements with central figures of that tumultuous period. The biography is the English translation of the Italian biographical comic by Rizzo and Bonaccorso. “Once I set my eyes on the Italian version,” said Rigakos “I knew we had to make it a Red Quill title.”

What’s next for Red Quill Books? “We want to do even more,” says Rigakos. “More scholarships for students studying social justice, more radical comix to aid students and general audiences understanding critical ideas, more academic texts that push boundaries. That’s what we’re all about.”

California Home Seller Fails To Disclose Big Toxic Mold Problems To Texas Buyers, Reports EnviroFry

Industrial Hygienist Phillip Fry of EnviroFry reports that a California home seller, realtor, home inspector, and mortgage lender are going to be sued by the home’s Texas buyers for failing to disclose the presence of elevated levels of toxic mold growth in both the crawl space and in the heating/cooling equipment and ducts.

Montrose, MI, February 04, 2014 -- On January 31, 2014, a couple, newly-arrived from Texas and now very ill from living in high levels of toxic mold, learned in reading mold lab test results of mold tests taken by Professional Industrial Hygienist and Certified Mold Inspector Phillip Fry of EnviroFry that their recently-purchased home in San Diego, California, is severely infested with seller-undisclosed, advanced toxic mold growth throughout the home’s large crawl space and in the heating/cooling equipment and ducts.

Through six indoor tests on Jan. 30th, Fry tested the crawl space mold, room air, and the outward air flow from the heating/cooling air supply ducts. Lab results reported high and dangerous mold levels (compared to the outdoor mold control test) of several toxic mold species including cancer-causing Aspergillus mold and Penicillium mold, both of which cause severe respiratory and other mold health problems in mold victims exposed to elevated levels of those mold species.

“Almost all of the wood timbers in the crawl space were encrusted with mold growth that was likely to have been years in the making. The crawl space masonry walls and the adjacent basement walls and floors were very wet, as determined by widespread spot checking with my moisture meter,” reported Mr. Fry, who is also a Certified Environmental Hygienist, Certified Mold Remediator, webmaster since 1999 of the mold information website www.moldinspector.com, and author of five mold advice ebooks available at www.moldmart.net.

“A major building defect was the lack of adequate waterproofing of the crawl space and basement walls and floors that enabled water runoff from neighboring, higher-elevation home lots and the roadway to enter into the crawl space and basement to drive mold growth,” added Mr. Fry who spent six hours carefully investigating and testing the house and its surroundings.

“Many hundreds of thousands of California and other USA and Canadian homes that are built on the sides or bottoms of hills have similar water intrusion and advanced toxic mold growth, which often grows upward into the insides of the floors and walls above,” warned Mr. Fry.

The home’s toxic mold problems have caused severe health problems for the couple, such as memory loss, headaches, chronic tiredness, sinus problems, and respiratory problems such as difficulty in breathing and frequent coughing and sneezing. Five days ago the couple’s doctor recommend that the couple move out, which they promptly did by moving into a nearby hotel.

“The couple told me that they will never return to the mold-contaminated home and that they have hired an attorney to sue the home seller, realtor, home inspector, and mortgage lender for the rescission of the home’s $500,000 purchase price, as well as for medical damages, loss of mold-contaminated furniture and possessions, and other compensatory and punitive damages,” stated Mr. Fry.

“The couple told me that the real estate agent used air fresheners and a burning candle to mask the home’s big mold smell during the couple’s visit to the home for sale. In addition, the home seller had recently installed new carpeting and laminate flooring to help conceal the house mold problems,” reported Mr. Fry.

Mr. Fry recommends that prospective home buyers and rental tenants pay for an independent and thorough mold inspection and testing of a home, condo, or apartment for sale or rent before finalizing any purchase or lease commitment.

“Especially important is to mold test the air of the attic, living area, basement, crawl space, and the outward air flow from heating/cooling duct registers, as well as to look for evidence of water intrusion and both visible and hidden mold growth,” recommended Fry whose nationwide firm EnviroFry provides mold inspection, testing, remediation and prevention services.
