Environmental Hygienist Phillip Fry Explains How To Remove Attic Mold Safely and Effectively

Environmental Hygienist Phillip Fry announces the 18 steps necessary for the safe removal and decontamination of attic mold growth in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, and Asia.

EnviroFry_Upkeep_Masters.jpg
Montrose, MI, April 29, 2015 -- “Attic mold growth is a major and common problem in homes and commercial buildings in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Asia, and world-wide because of roof leaks and/or inadequate attic ventilation,” notes Phillip Fry, Certified Environmental Hygienist, Professional Industrial Hygienist, author of five mold books, and webmaster since 1999 of the frequently-visited educational website www.moldinspector.com.

Fry recommends that the following Upkeep Masters, LLC, proven eighteen steps be taken for the safe and effective removal of attic mold growth---

1. Find and repair all roof leaks that enable water to get into the attic.
2. Increase attic ventilation by adding more roof vents, more roof overhang so
ffit vents, and a humidstat-controlled electric exhaust fan in the attic that turns on automatically to exhaust humid attic air outward whenever the attic humidity hits a humidstat setting such as 50 to 60% humidity.

3. All attic mold removal workers must wear at all times in the attic the following personal protective equipment: respirator mask with filters rated to collect volatile organic compounds, eye goggles with no holes (“Chem-Splash” type), disposable vinyl gloves, and Tyvek or comparable enviro body suits with built in park hoods and booties.

4. Take mold test surface samplings of the worst attic mold growth, as well as of the attic air, to serve as a comparison benchmark later after mold removal when clearance tests are done in the attic to determine how successfully and totally the mold has been removed.

5. Seal off the attic area from the rest of the house or building with an entry and exit chamber or room made of 6 mil thick, clear plastic sheeting, with a zippered entrance cut and taped into the plastic sheeting. The sheeting must be tight wall to wall and floor to ceiling.

6. Do an initial kill of as much attic mold as possible by running high output ozone generators for eight hours in the attic. Learn about the mold-killing effectiveness of ozone blasters at www.ozonegeneratorkillsmold.com.

7. Lift up the insulation bats or check beneath other types of insulation to investigate whether mold growth has spread to the timbers and flooring alongside and beneath the insulation.

8. If there is mold growth along side or beneath the insulation, or on the paper backing of insulation or on dust and dirt that has settled onto the insulation material, of if the insulation is wet or has been wet, remove and discard the insulation. Install new insulation after the attic mold remediation project is done, including successful clearance testing.

9. If there has been no mold contamination of the insulation and the insulation looks good, or after the removal of mold-impacted insulation, cover the attic floor with new, thick cloth coverings to protect it from mold cross contamination and falling debris generated by the blasting or grinding processes used in the attic mold removal process. Put two foot wide plywood walkways on top of the cloth covering so that workers can do the mold remediation steps without stepping through the ceilings below the attic.

10. During the attic mold removal process, maintain negative air pressure inside the attic by connecting one or more air scrubbers with flexible hosing from the attic area to the scrubbers that will be located on the ground or elsewhere in the building. Air scrubbers use large, thick HEPA filters to remove airborne mold spores and activated carbon filters to remove airborne mold mycotoxins (poisonous, volatile organic compound gases thrown into the air during toxic mold growth). Air scrubbers remove over 99% of airborne mold spores and mycotoxins, with the scrubber output directly vented by more flexible hosing to the outdoors. Negative air pressure makes the entire attic into a giant vacuum cleaner by continually removing more attic air than is coming into the attic.

11. HEPA vacuum all attic timbers to remove as much landed dirt and mold spores
as possible.

12. Use high pressure abrasive blasting or grinders with wire brush attachments to remove all surface mold growth to make the cleaned wood surfaces visibly mold-free.

13. Do a second HEPA vacuuming of all attic timbers as well as vacuuming up the removed mold spores and wood debris now resting on top of the floor covering as the result of the abrasive mold removal step described above.

14. Rollup the cloth floor coverings and put them into 6 mil thick contractor trash bags. Then put each bag inside a second bag (“double bagging”). Remove these bags throw an attic window or the closest other window or door.

15. Follow up with a second eight hour high output ozone gas treatment.

16. After the second ozone treatment, fog an EPA-registered fungicide throughout the entire attic as an additional mold-killing step.

17. After the fungicidal fogging, spray all attic wood surfaces with a see-through clear, EPA-registered anti-microbial, encapsulation coating to help prevent future mold growth. Don’t use a white or black coating that would hide future mold growth or mold not properly removed in the current mold removal project.

18. Take surface samples from the cleaned wood plus attic air samples for lab analysis to compare the levels of mold after mold remediation with the mold levels existing before the project. If mold levels are still high, repeat one or more of the above steps so that the attic finally tests as mold-safe.

Inspirational Success Speaker Walks the Talk with Latest Extra Mile World Adventure

Shawn Anderson to Hike 400 Miles Across Portugal.

Los Angeles, CA, April 29, 2015 /PressReleaseCircle/ -- Motivational author and speaker Shawn Anderson doesn’t just talk about ideas such as “going the extra mile” and “living the life you love”...he lives them. The six-time author and inspirational keynoter will be walking 440 miles from Lisbon, Portugal, to Finisterre, Spain, starting on May 26, 2015.

Shawn_Anderson.jpg
“I’m a big believer in keeping sharp,” Anderson says. “Life has a way of dulling our potential unless we break everyday routines and create opportunities that push us outside our comfort zones. Hiking as far as I can each day across Portugal with nothing more than a small book backpack over my shoulder has the potential to definitely sharpen me.”
Creating adventures to sharpen himself is not a new concept for Anderson. He has biked solo across the United States twice, hiked 550 miles across Spain in 27 days, run a 100-mile race, completed a 40-day around-the-world trip and has been to over 40 countries. Immediately following the Portugal adventure, Anderson will be heading to the Philippines on a speaking tour with the expectation of reaching 20,000 Filipinos.

“Dream big and take bigger action,” Anderson shares. “Life is too short to wish for second chances. Now is my chance to not only live the life I love, but to make the biggest difference I can.”

In addition to being a successful lifetime entrepreneur, Anderson is also the Founder of Extra Mile America and the creator of “Extra Mile Day” - a day recognizing the capacity we each have to create positive change when we go the extra mile. On November 1, 2014, 527 mayors and cities made the unique declaration and recognized those in their local communities who were going the extra mile in volunteerism and service. On November 1 this year, 550 U.S. cities are expected to declare Extra Mile Day.

The author of the motivational book, Amicus 101: A Story of the Pursuit of Purpose and Overcoming Life’s Chaos, concludes, “The quality, value, and adventure of each of our lives will always be determined by our own vision and a willingness to take action on that vision.”

To interview or book Shawn Anderson as a guest or speaker, call 310-402-4826 or email Shawn@ShawnAnderson.com. For more information about Extra Mile Day, visit ExtraMileAmerica.org.

Hygienist Phillip Fry Explains How To Find Mold Growth and Germs in Home and Workplace Bathrooms

Industrial Hygienists Phillip Fry outlines the seven steps that should be taken by a property owner, manager, or tenant to locate toxic mold and germ infestation inside the bathrooms and restrooms of residences and commercial buildings in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Asia, and worldwide.

EnviroFry_Upkeep_Masters.jpg
Montrose, MI, April 29, 2015/PressReleaseCircle/ -- “Toxic mold growth and dangerous germs are often hidden in out of the way places in the bathrooms and restrooms of homes, commercial buildings, and workplaces in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Asia, and worldwide,” warns Phillip Fry, Professional Industrial Hygienist, Certified Environmental Hygienist, and webmaster since 1999 of the popular mold education website www.moldinspector.com.
Fry recommends the following steps for finding hidden mold and germ infestation in bathrooms and restrooms:

1. During the bathroom search, the inspector- property owner, manager, employee, or tenant should wear a N-95 breathing mask (about $3 from a home improvement or hardware store), eye goggles with no holes (“chem splash” for $5 from same sources) to keep mold spores out of the inspector’s eyes, and disposable vinyl gloves.

2. Use a high powered flashlight to aid in the search.

3. Look for visible mold and germ growth in the following areas: (a) inside the toilet tank because mold and germs grow well in water, and thus enabling the resulting mold spores and germs cells to get thrown into the bathroom breathing air during each toilet flush; (b) both sides of shower curtains and window curtains; (c) inside the exhaust fan vent pipe; (d) inside sink vanity cabinets, especially if there are leaks in the water supply and drain lines; (e) inside the drain pipes of sinks, showers, and tubs; (f) in the grout lines of ceramic tile on the walls and floors (look for discoloration, especially black, in the grout).

4. Use the Scotch tape “lift sampling” to collect surface samples in all of the above areas to send to a microbiology lab for both mold and bacterial analysis, identification, and quantification. How to do lift tape sampling is explained on the website www.moldexpertconsultants.com.

Bathroom mold infestation affects both expensive homes and average-priced homes. Industrial hygienists Phillip and Divine Fry found in lab results an astonishingly high mold spore count of over 32,000 mold spores per square centimeter of the dangerous toxic mold species Cladosporium inside the toilet tank in the master bathroom of an expensive home in Rochester Hills, in well-to-do Oakland County, Michigan, in April, 2015.

5. In addition to lift tape sampling of the above-specified areas, also do lift tape sampling with lab analysis for out of the way places such as the top of window and door trim and light fixtures.

6. Use a good quality moisture meter (about $50 from a hardware or home improvement store) to scan walls and floors for the possibility of elevated levels of moisture, an indication of a water leak or high humidity.

7. Use a hygrometer (about $50 online) to check the humidity of the bathroom. Mold starts growing if indoor humidity exceeds 70%.

Inspirational Success Speaker to Energize 20,000 in Philippines

Shawn Anderson to Share “Go the Extra Mile and Live the Life You Love” Message in Manila.

Los Angeles, CA, April 28, 2015/PressReleaseCircle/ -- Motivational author, Shawn Anderson, the creator of “Extra Mile Day” in the U.S., has announced that the Philippines will be the first stop on his Extra Mile World speaking tour. Anderson, the author of six books including SOAR to the Top!, Amicus 101, and Extra Mile America: Stories of Inspiration, Possibility and Purpose, will take his empowering “go the extra mile” message to the Philippine Islands from July 18 thru August 2, 2015. Speaking to a variety of non-profit outreach and community organizations, Anderson has set a goal of reaching 20,000 people for his free events.

Shawn_Anderson.jpg
“My tour mission is simple. I want to share with as much passion as I can, to as many people as I can, that when we go the extra mile in life, we create our very best lives,” Anderson shares. “I don’t believe in just dreaming about the life we want to live; I do believe in taking action and living the life we want to live.”

Anderson is the Founder of Extra Mile America and the creator of Extra Mile Day...a day recognizing the capacity we each have to create positive change when we go the extra mile. On November 1, 2014, 527 U.S. cities made the unique declaration and recognized those in their local communities who were going the extra mile in volunteerism and service.

Anderson doesn’t just talk about themes such as “go the extra mile” and “live the life you love”; he lives them. In 2014, this lifetime entrepreneur hiked 550 miles across Spain in 27 days. Shortly before he visits the Philippines this year, he will have hiked 400 miles across Portugal. Additionally, Anderson has biked the U.S. solo twice, run a 100-mile race and created adventures around the world. With 75,000 book copies in print, Anderson says he’s only just begun.

“It doesn’t matter how old we are or what obstacles we have to overcome. Our best days are only over when we say they are over,” Anderson states. “When I go to the Philippines, I will share with as much passion as I can that we’re each limited in life only by what the person in the mirror thinks and does. Until we have no more breath in our lungs should we ever give up on ourselves.”

Wendy Vogel's Adventure/Fantasy Flamewalker Now Available

In Saria, women reign.

Their powers come from the Goddess, and her Flamewalkers wear the scars of sacred magic. Gifted with the ability to Heal, See or conjure Fire, they use their powers fairly and wisely.
Flamewalker.jpg
Then comes Khalira. Bestowed with not one, but all three powers, she is feared by even the other Flamewalkers—a 'freak' among the extraordinary. The leaders suspect that her powers were granted for a reason, and, indeed, there is an ominous threat emerging to the north in the kingdom of Banol where Flamewalkers are burned alive for merely being who they are meant to be.

In Wendy Vogel’s first published full-length novel, she explores the roles of women, power and destiny while taking the reader on an action-filled journey laced with danger and courage as Khalira and her sister Flamewalkers endeavor to bring to an end a madman set on revenge.

“The subtext of Flamewalkers examines how people view powerful women. While some may see them as benevolent healers, others may perceive them as dangerous,” says publisher Catherine Rayburn-Trobaugh. “Dr. Vogel offers readers an engaging debate in the form of an adventure that is very readable and very, very difficult to put down.”

Wendy Vogel lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with her chef husband. She is a veterinarian, marathon runner, cancer survivor and SCUBA diver in addition to rescuing special needs pets. She is the current president of the Cincinnati Fiction Writers.

Islamic finance is gaining momentum around the world with major banks and financial institutions in Asia, Europe, Africa, the United States, and Australia engaging in the different modes of Islamic finance, issuing million dollar sukuks, developing takaful (Islamic insurance) companies, and implementing legislation and regulations in order to enable Islamic finance transactions. The business leaders of most nations of the world recognize Islamic finance as a valuable business model and form of alternative finance to stimulate economic growth, raise funds for businesses and government projects, and diversify assets, investments, and investor classes.

Africa is now embracing large-scale Islamic finance as it seeks to tap cash-rich Middle Eastern Investors to finance large infrastructure programs. The Seychelles and Ghana became the first countries in the region to issue Islamic bonds, in 2006 and 2007 respectively, but it was not until 2011-12 that others followed suit. In 2013, Nigeria became the first big economy in sub-Saharan Africa to use the $100bn a year market for sukuk, or Islamic bonds with a $62 Million Dollar Sukuk. Soon after, Senegal raised $200 Million through a sukuk issuance in 2014. Rolling with the African Sukuk momentum, South Africa issued a $500m sukuk, which was more than four times subscribed, with an order book of $2.2bn according to the SA Treasury, indicating that appetite for emerging market Islamic bonds matches that of developed world issuance. The bond, which matures in June 2020, is a Sukuk Al-Ijarah structure with cash flows based on infrastructure assets, although the country has not made public what these assets are. Even Gambia and Sudan have issued sukuk, however, for small amounts and on a short-term basis.

Sukuk are particularly suited for sub-Saharan Africa, a region that needs huge investments in infrastructure, from power stations and railways to ports and roads. In addition, Morocco, Tunisia, and Kenya are laying the legal groundwork to issue sukuk and operate Islamic banks. Tunisia also has a sukuk issuance in the pipeline, however, delayed its planned issue of $500 million in Islamic bonds until the third quarter of this year in order to allow parliament time to rectify a law concerning the sale. Kenya's financial regulator has proposed a separate regulatory framework for Islamic financial institutions as part of a broad ten-year strategy designed to boost capital markets in east Africa's biggest economy. According to Ernst and Young, the global sukuk market is projected to reach $900 Billion by 2017. The UK drew orders of more than £2bn from investors in the UK, Middle East, and Asia for its sale of £200m of Shariah-compliant debt in June and earlier this month Hong Kong raised $1bn in its debut Islamic bond issue, attracting nearly $5bn in orders. It is the right time for Africa to engage in Islamic finance to attract funds for infrastructure and government projects as well as raise capital for African businesses. Zubair Mughal, CEO of Al Huda CIBE and Camille Paldi, CEO of FAAIF, plan to conduct a joint Al Huda and FAAIF Islamic finance training event on June 19-20, 2015 in Milan, Italy.

FAAIF.jpg
Dubai, UAE, April 18, 2015 /PressReleaseCircle/ -- Zubair Mughal, CEO of Al Huda CIBE and Camille Paldi, CEO of FAAIF, plan to conduct a joint Al Huda and FAAIF Islamic finance training event on June 19-20, 2015 in Milan, Italy. FAAIF and Al Huda, realizing the immense need for training on Islamic Banking and Finance in Europe, plan to organize a Two Day Training Workshop on Islamic Banking and Finance to meet the demand for training in the Italian and EU market. The workshop fits in well with the theme of the Milan Expo 2015 currently taking place in Milan, Italy.

Topics will include an Introduction to Islamic Banking and Finance, Islamic Banking and Finance in Europe, Sukuk Case-Studies, Legal Aspects of Takaful, Islamic Funds, Shari’ah in Islamic Finance, Documentation Required to Conduct Each Mode of Islamic finance, Sukuk, and Takaful, and Dispute Resolution in Islamic finance.

Mr. Zubair Mughal, CEO of Al Huda CIBE, says that due to the recent financial crises, Islamic financing is emerging as an alternative source of financial sustainability in Europe and the world. In fact, Mughal states that many European countries are becoming interested in this type of finance and have issued sukuk or Islamic bonds such as the UK, Luxembourg, and Germany. Many other European nations are exploring Islamic finance as an option such as Spain, Malta, Italy, and others. Mughal stresses that Islamic finance is a business opportunity and financial solution and not necessarily a religious product. He says the time is now for Islamic finance and Europe. Word Branch Publishing Releases Controversial New Book, Loving Pearl: A Mother’s Call to Unconditional Love

In Dawn Bennett’s groundbreaking book, she reconciles her faith with her daughter’s sexual orientation.

“I’m gay.”

These are often difficult words for parents to hear from their child, and reactions can run from denial and anger to loving acceptance. But what happens when your offspring’s sexual orientation collides with your faith? What will your friends think? What will your family say? Where will you and your child go from here? How will you move forward?

Loving_Pearl.jpg
Author Dawn Bennett faced these questions when confronted with her own daughter’s homosexuality. As a mother, she was concerned that the world would be a harsh place for her daughter. As a Christian, she had to come to terms with her religion and the true meaning of Christ’s words.

In Loving Pearl: A Mother’s Call to Unconditional Love, Bennett shares her personal story of her journey with her daughter, nicknamed Pearl, as a backdrop for a wider social and spiritual debate. She is quick to note that the message in Loving Pearl is for everyone regardless of faith, “Really, it is a love story. This concept is a core concept in just about every faith and cultural background on the planet.”

From bullying and marginalization to issues within the church and society, Dawn Bennett’s empowering words and personal experiences aid parents in finding the courage and love to support and nurture their LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender) child.

“The decision to love unconditionally is life changing. The reality of it is by no means an easy walk,” says Bennett. “I acknowledge the content of this book is both emotional and thought provoking. Religion-based bigotry is a very unique kind of bigotry and causes the utmost harm. When a person is divided within themselves and in their relationship with their Creator, it can be a devastating and oftentimes dangerous, life threatening place.”

The public debate about Christianity and LGBT rights is both current and topical. “Loving Pearl is a book for our times,” says publisher Catherine Rayburn-Trobaugh. “It addresses difficult questions that many people face as parents. Ms. Bennett’s straightforward, sincere narrative is tender, provocative and even academic to provide readers with a very honest look at the relationship of Christianity with the LGBT community. Dawn Bennett is both a storyteller and woman of faith, and Loving Pearl deserves a place on every thinking person’s bookshelf.”

Loving Pearl can be purchased through major online retailers and bookshops as well as the Word Branch Publishing’s website: https://www.wordbranch.com/store/p79/Loving_Pearl.html

Loving Pearl is the third LGBT book published by Word Branch. Earlier this year, JT Collins’ fictional account of her own experiences, Face in the Mirror, was released, and Julian Norwood’s young adult, transgender novel, Forsaking Magic, was published in 2014. All of these titles can be found at https://www.wordbranch.com/store/c15/LGBT.html.

The Islamic Finance Industry Must Harmonize Financial Reporting

An Islamic Perspective of Accounting, Finance, Economics and Management (IPAFEM) Conference takes place in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom April 7-9, 2015.

FAAIF.jpg
Dubai, UAE, April 09, 2015(PressReleaseCircle) -- Camille Paldi, FAAIF CEO, participates in IPAFEM 2015 in Glasgow, Scotland. Paldi described the inconsistent and incoherent financial reporting practices used by Islamic banks today and suggested that the industry adopt the KFH (Bahrain) B.S.C.(c) Public Disclosure Report as a template to be used across the Islamic finance industry. The report can be easily found on google. Paldi explains that banks across the industry use different accounting methods and reporting techniques and that this leads to confusion, inconsistency, non-transparency, and possibly a misleading representation of the true financial health of the IFI. Paldi emphasizes that the special nature of Islamic banking requires tailored standards in order to promote full disclosure and transparency of the IFI.

Conventional accounting standards such as IFRS do not equip Islamic banks with the necessary degree of disclosure and transparency in light of Islamic modes of finance, as risk exposures of assets vary according to different types of contracts and the mode may be used for sale or finance, which would result in different reporting implications. Furthermore, there are many rules in the Shari’ah, which the IFI must abide by, which may affect reporting requirements. General disclosures unique to IFI’s are information about the Shari’ah Advisory Board, policies on zakat, policies of profit distribution with Investment Account Holders, disclosures on prohibited earnings and disclosures of concentration of asset risks involving unrestricted investment accounts. Many gaps in disclosure occur due to use of conflicting standards.

Furthermore, in general in Islamic banks, capital adequacy and the use of regulatory capital are governed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision rather than the standards issued by AAOIFI and the IFSB. However, Islamic finance standards are required to regulate deposits based on Wadi’ah (guaranteed safe custody) or Qard Hassan (interest free loan) contracts, which are reported as liabilities in the balance sheet and are not taken into account by Basel Standards. As Islamic banks do not use the IFSB and AAOIFI standards for capital adequacy, the capital adequacy percentages may not truly reflect the bank’s capital structure and stakeholders cannot truly assess whether capital structure decisions were made to maximize shareholder equity. Morse Data Corporation Announces Stock “Drop Transfer” Feature for InOrder ERP Software

Clients using InOrder can allocate stock that is available at a nearby location to orders that might otherwise be cancelled or backordered.

InOrder_-_Enterprise_Management_Software.jpg
Dover, NH, April 03, 2015(PressReleaseCircle) -- Morse Data Corporation, developer of InOrder Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, has announced a new Stock “Drop Transfer” feature. Instead of automatically backordering or canceling an out of stock item, InOrder can see stock available at a nearby location. If that stock can be brought to the warehouse in time to fill the line item, it is allocated to the order.

Stock can be pulled from any designated facility that may have the stock on hand, such as a remote storage location, a point of sale store or merchandise exhibit, or even a consignment location. In case stock is sold to a point of sale customer before it can be transferred, InOrder waits to print the order in the ship-from warehouse until the transfer is posted to confirm the stock was retrieved.

“We are so happy with this new capability because it extends the vendor drop shipping feature to reach onto our own store shelves, but without the added shipping cost that would be incurred with multi-warehouse shipping,” says Tony Marchese, Morse Data VP. “This allows even lower stock levels for low density items since they don't need to be stocked at every location. Plus, it gives the best possible customer access to the sell-until-gone SKUs that are offered to all channels. What a great solution for end-customers. But most of all, this can lower inventory investment and improve inventory throughput at the same time.”

About Morse Data Corporation
In business since 1975 and headquartered in Dover, NH with technical offices in Orland Park, IL, Morse Data Corporation offers InOrder, a real-time, tightly-integrated, single database ERP system for multi-channel merchants, Internet retailers, publishers, and fulfillment solutions providers. Inspirational Success Speaker Announces Philippines Tour

Shawn Anderson to Share “Go the Extra Mile” Message with 20,000 Filipinos.

Los Angeles, CA, April 02, 2015(PressReleaseCircle) -- Motivational author, Shawn Anderson, the creator of “Extra Mile Day” in the U.S., has announced that the Philippines will be the first stop on his Extra Mile World speaking tour. Anderson, the author of six books including SOAR to the Top!, Amicus 101, and Extra Mile America: Stories of Inspiration, Possibility and Purpose, will take his empowering “go the extra mile” message to the Philippine Islands from July 18 thru August 2, 2015. Speaking to a variety of non-profit outreach organizations, Anderson has set a goal of reaching 20,000 people for his free events.

MIHAS Promotes Malaysia as a Halal Hub

Malaysia’s Global Halal Summit takes place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from April 1 – April 4, 2015.

Dubai, UAE, April 01, 2015(PressReleaseCircle) -- FAAIF CEO Camille Paldi participates in MIHAS 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2004, when Malaysia launched its first Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) in Kuala Lumpur, the then Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in his speech declared that establishing Malaysia as a global halal hub was a major priority for the government and that MIHAS was the largest halal trade expo to be held anywhere in the world (aside from Gulfood in Dubai, UAE). Halal products and services in Malaysia cover a wide range of products that extend from food and beverage to accommodation, attire, insurance, financial products, cosmetics, and personal hygiene. As of June 2011, Malaysia’s halal industry was estimated to be worth MYR 56 billion a year whereas the global market was estimated at US2.5 trillion.

FAAIF.jpg
Malaysia’s global halal hub concept aims to create opportunities for small and medium enterprises, or SME’s, to penetrate the halal markets in the Middle East, OIC countries, and globally. Shockingly, in 2011, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mukhriz Mahathir, announced that Native Malays held only 30 % of the 4787 halal certificates so far issued by JAKIM in the food and beverage industry. In reality, the halal industry is dominated by non-Muslims and non-Muslim countries producing halal food and beverages for export. This is despite the fact that being certified halal could be a ticket to growth outside of Malaysia. The reason for these figures may include the cost associated with halal certification in Malaysia. It costs up to MYR 2,000 to get a two-year certificate for each product. The market potential is huge for halal products especially in ASEAN, the Middle East, and China and therefore, more steps should be taken to enable the Native Malaysian population to access affordable halal certification from JAKIM.

As part of its global halal hub policy, the Malaysian government has taken measures in both its Second Industrial Master Plan (1996 – 2005) and the National Agricultural Policy (1998-2010) to support the industry through the creation of a number of halal parks in the country. Halal parks are an effective instrument in clustering a big part of a halal value chain geographically in a country. Next to clustering advantages such as shortening of supply chain, cost reductions, innovations, etc., halal parks can create a strong base for halal food products and allow enforcing of a common halal standard more efficiently (Kamali: The Parameters of Halal and Haram in the Shariah and the Halal Industry, 2013).
